The absence of a few of the many pros who were slated to race the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney took nothing away from the quality of racing, with Josh Amberger adding another victory to his impressive resume from the season thus far and and ecstatic Anja Beranek who was supposed to be holdaying after Mandurah managing to squeeze in another race and run away with a victory.
The venue itself is a great place for a race, if a little sterile, but the existing infrastructure means a well run event is a certainty. A bit more choice with the catering wouldnt have gone astray and a little more work on the bike exit where it got very congested would help alleviate a number of very close calls. But all in all it seemed like a good event for a first time.
If it had of been 10 degrees cooler on the day it may have well been the perfect "first race" but the ferocious heat will have scarred a few athletes both mentally and physically.
