From Major League Baseball to IRONMAN

 

Aaron 28, from Rouse Hill in Sydney played for the Seattle Mariners from 2004-2008, while his older brother Baulkham Hills resident, 33-year-old David, played with the Montreal Expos from 1999-2005 the Washington Nationals from 2005-2006 and finished up with the Boston Red Sox in 2007.

After retiring from professional baseball the Sydney brothers were looking for a way to stay fit, and discovered triathlon.

“I was always a good runner so I decided to start doing half marathons then marathons and wanted the ultimate challenge of becoming an IRONMAN so without ever being on a bike or really swimming outside of school carnivals I decided why not train for the ultimate triathlon and 12 months ago decided I would do Melbourne,” Aaron said.

For one family member to live out his dream of playing professional baseball is an amazing feat, for two brothers to do it is remarkable.

“Playing baseball for a living was my dream growing up. It was a lot of hard work but worth it when you are playing the sport you love as a living. Highlight of my baseball career would be signing the contract with Montreal Expos when I was 17 years old,” David said.

“It’s hard to put into words when everything you dream of as a little kid turns into reality,” Aaron said. “When I signed with the Seattle Mariners as a 16-year-old it was a relief to know I was one step closer to the Big Leagues.”

And as you’d expect both brothers are excited about going head to head come race day, and surprisingly they both agree on who will come out on top.

“Usually I love to banter with my brother telling him I’ll beat him but I think he is going to be too far ahead of me come the marathon. For me to try run him down considering he can run a sub 3 hour marathon is a big ask,” Aaron said.
