The 41-year-old from Marden in South Australia will be making his IRONMAN® debut at June 14’s Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns.
Throughout his cricketing days Swain harboured a passion for triathlon, often using short course races to keep his fitness levels up for the rigours of first class cricket.
“I still remember each year watching the Hawaiian IRONMAN with my brother, the images of Greg Welch winning in 1994 and the epic crawling finish in 1997 of Sian Welch and Wendy Ingraham have stayed with me ever since. I have always wanted to compete an IRONMAN, it’s been a life goal,” he said.
His cricket career however took precedence, then came work and family commitments, but all through that time the fire to complete an IRONMAN still burnt brightly.
“After some negotiation on the home front, Cairns was locked in, of course the IRONMAN came with the promise of a family holiday in Cairns afterwards, this way everyone’s a winner,” he said.
Swain won’t be the first ex-South Australian cricketer to become an IRONMAN. In 2013 former Australian cricketer Graham Manou completed the IRONMAN Asia Pacific Championship in Melbourne in a time of 11 hours and 19 minutes.
“I was fortunate to play a number first class and one day games with Graham Manou. He took over the wicket keeping gloves when Tim Nielsen retired and to this day still remember him taking a classic catch to help me dismiss Matthew Elliott caught behind.” he said.
“Over the years Graham has taken on lots of long ride challenges for Heart Health, his endurance fitness is impressive as shown by his 11:19 in Melbourne last year. Can I beat this time? Well that’s will be answered in just over 4 weeks’ time. I fear it may be safe.”
IRONMAN race day will see over 3,000 age group athletes chasing their own personal bests.
The Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, incorporating the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns | Flight Centre Active Travel IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns, will be held from Sunday, June 7 – Monday, June 15, 2015.
