Meryl Carroll-Cawte has some unfinished business to take care of, starting with Sunday’s IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney triathlon.

The 55-year-old from Ocean View in Queensland has qualified twice for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but misfortune and health issues forced her withdrawal.

Unknowingly she won her age group at IRONMAN 70.3 Yeppoon five years ago. At the prompting of her husband and wanting to relax post-race, she returned to her accommodation and it was only the next day that she checked the results to find out she had won the title.

"At that point it was too late as my spot had rolled down to another competitor. I was so upset and my husband felt terrible," Carroll-Cawte said.

Two years later health issues forced her out of a start at IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast although she recovered sufficiently to earn that much-desired world championship spot at IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie

"It was not the best race, but I ended up getting a spot through a roll down. I was so excited. After that, my husband chased a spot and ended up getting one at IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns."

Unfortunately six weeks before flying out to Canada, an MRI discovered an aggressive tumour on Carrol-Cawte’s hip and abdomen.

"This was removed two weeks before the world champs. Our trip to Canada had to be cancelled, then two months later, I had a hip replacement."

Fully recovered and in good shape, Carroll-Cawte is excited that the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship is on the Sunshine Coast, and she hopes it will be third time lucky as she attempts to qualify at IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney.

"I know qualifying will be hard but I’ve already race at Sunshine Coast, Port Macquarie and will race at Western Sydney and Port Macquarie next year as well as Cairns."

Over 1,600 age group athletes will be racing over the IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney.
