IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND THE SON

Upon finishing the 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km run that make up an IRONMAN event most athletes are filled with an enormous amount of pride.

For Troy Harrison, from Crafers in South Australia, that pride will be amplified when he hopefully becomes an IRONMAN for the first time at Sunday’s SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia on the same day as his son Clae.

Father and son both raced at IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns last year and IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton this year.

“To say I am excited to be racing with Clae is an understatement! A month or two ago Clae had quite a nasty hip injury and so it looked 50/50 that he would be able to do Busso,” Troy said. “I realised when he had to turn back one day on a training ride that the main reason I am doing this is the time we get to spend together. We have always been very close.”

Troy and Clae train together whenever they can and for them the race is about much more than just the finish line, it’s about the time the journey they have undertaken together as father and son.

“I love the challenge of becoming better as an athlete and as a person. I love the fact that on race day when you arrive it is so apparent that every person there is there because they are trying to better themselves,” Troy said.
And for the record Troy is expecting Clae to have a good day.

“I think he will go well. He has had an interrupted lead up and works long hours as a paramedic. He is also a combat paramedic in the army reserves so his time management skills are awesome,” he said.

“We train together whenever it is remotely possible. We have always believed that Ironman is more about the journey than the day itself. So to be on that journey together is the ultimate.”
