This week I was brave enough to head to an inner city craft brewery without either a beard or skinny jeans, but it was for good reason. I was there to check out the new season offerings from Shimano and Pearl Izumi.
Pearl Izumis new tri range is certainly innovative and eye catching, and the tri shoes carry some innovative features that will put them towards the top of many shopping lists.
Of particular note is their womens line. The clothing has some great fabrics and features and their shoes are designed around a womens last, so their womens range is not just a shrunk or "pinked" mens line. We hope to catch up with Pearl Izumi soon to do a feature on their womens tri line.
The main technical features of the Pearl Izumi shoes carries through the entire range so there is no scrimping on the lower priced shoes. All models have minimal seams and are lined for barefoot comfort. They also have two straps for maximal adjusment.
The womens Tri Fly V Carbon RRP $259.00
The womens Tri Fly V RRP $179.00
The mens Tri Fly V Carbon RRP $259.00
The Mens Tri Fly V RRP $179.00
The rear of the shoe has a few main features. The small central loop is for the elastic band used to keep the shoes level for a flying mount. The larger loop for pulling the heel of the shoe on, is placed at an angle to make the loop more accessible in the heat of battle. The heel is also reinforced with a capping to protect the shoe in an area where wear is common due to shoes dragging on mounting and dismounting.
The closure tab is notched to engage the closure loop to keep the strap open until you are ready to pull it closed. The additional velcro on the outside of the tab engages with the matching velcro on the outside of the shoe upper to keep the upper open also for an easy and fast entry.
We hope to get hold of a pair of shoes for a closer inspection and maybe a test ride soon and also hope to get a better look at the Pearl Izumi tri clothing as late night in a brewery wasn't a great oppotunity for well focused photos.
